Insurers assess engine configuration as a component of risk, but displacement alone is not the primary factor. Power output, the modification ecosystem required, and how the car is used matter more than whether you’re running a 302ci or a 496ci. Understanding how insurers think about this helps you present your build accurately.

When underwriting a modified car, insurers primarily assess:

  • High torque outputs stress drivetrain components — transmission and axle failures are more common
  • Big block builds often represent larger total investments
