Roll Cage Installation and Car Insurance: What You Need to Know

Two cars racing down the quarter mile drag strip

Installing a roll cage fundamentally changes how an insurer classifies your car. A road car with a cage is no longer simply a modified road car — it is a vehicle prepared for motorsport use, which changes underwriting categories, pricing models, and often the insurance product that applies. Understanding this before you weld the cage in saves significant frustration later.

How Insurers View Roll Cages

From an underwriting perspective, a roll cage signals:

  • The car is intended for motorsport or track use
  • The owner has accepted the car is at higher risk than standard road vehicles
  • Standard road insurance may not be appropriate
  • A motorsport specialist or modified car specialist is the correct insurer

This doesn’t mean your car becomes uninsurable — it means the right insurance product changes.

Road Car With a Cage: Insurance Implications

If your caged car retains road registration and is driven on public roads:

  • Declare the cage (and all associated safety equipment) to your specialist road insurer
  • Some road insurers decline caged cars — specialist modified car insurers are the right channel
  • Your agreed value must include the cage installation cost ($2,000–$15,000 depending on complexity)
  • The cage must be certified to applicable standards (SFI 25.1, FIA 8869, etc.) for the power level and event type

SFI and FIA Certification Requirements

Many insurers and event organisers require SFI 25.1 or FIA 8869 certification for roll cages in cars above specific power or ET thresholds. NHRA tech requires cages for cars running quicker than 11.49 seconds in the quarter mile. An uncertified cage in a car where certification is required can void your insurance and disqualify you from competition.

Cage Specification and Insurance

Cage Type Insurance Classification Typical Premium Impact

Welded half cage (4-point) Motorsport-leaning road car +15–30%
