“A Sequence To Rival Oldboy”: Extraction 2 Director’s High Goals For New One-Shot Scene

Director Sam Hargrave has revealed his and writer Joe Russo’s high goals for Extraction 2’s one-shot scene, including topping Oldboy’s. The upcoming Netflix action sequel picks up nearly a year after the events of its predecessor, with Chris Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake having recovered from his wounds and tasked with rescuing a ruthless Georgian gangster’s family from the prison they’re living in with him. Again written by Avengers: Endgame’s Joe Russo and helmed by Hargrave, Extraction 2 is expanding the franchise in a number of ways.

When asked about the sequel’s one-shot scene and raising the scale of its predecessor, the director recalls the note included in the script from writer Joe Russo for it to be a “sequence to rival Oldboy” and the hardships that came from his high goals. The original Extraction’s one-shot scene proved to be one of the most talked-about elements for the 2020 movie, with critics and audiences alike impressed by the 12-minute sequence that encompassed multiple hand-to-hand fights and a car chase. The latter section of the action scene was so intense it resulted in both near and full-on accidents, including Hargrave nearly being crushed between two vehicles and a stuntman breaking his foot and still going ahead with another take.

Hemsworth previously revealed the sequel would feature a much longer scene, which was later said to clock in at 21 minutes long, and shared some details of what it would entail, including a helicopter, a moving train going at least “40 clicks” and a choreographed fight featuring 300 extras. The Extraction 2 trailers released thus far have shown some of what’s to come from the bigger one-shot scene, including Hemsworth being set on fire and continuing to brawl through the foes, who appear to be inmates of the prison his character’s mission is set.

With the Russo brothers teasing plans for an Extraction 3 and Hemsworth similarly being eager for another installment in the action franchise, it will be interesting to see how Hargrave and co. can top themselves again.
