5 Pancreatic Cancer Symptoms and Treatment Options

Pancreatic cancer is a rare but deadly disease that is often diagnosed in later stages because it does not cause symptoms in its early stages. According to Nebraska Medicine, an estimated 62,210 new cases of pancreatic cancer were diagnosed in the US in 2022, making it the third-leading cause of cancer-related death in the country.

Some of the symptoms of pancreatic cancer include:

  • Jaundice
  • Abdominal or back pain
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fatigue

Factors that may increase the risk of developing pancreatic cancer include smoking, obesity, and a family history of the disease. Additionally, around 10% of cancers are caused by genetic conditions, such as Lynch syndrome and the BRCA1 and 2 mutations.

There are several treatment options available for pancreatic cancer, including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Advances in treatment, such as multi-agent chemotherapies, have helped improve the prognoses for pancreatic cancer patients. The five-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer increased from 5% in 2000 to 11.5% in 2018.

Nebraska Medicine has recently been nationally recognized as a Center of Excellence by the National Pancreas Foundation for outstanding clinical care and scientific innovation.
