When you're kayaking in the ocean 4 miles from shore, probably the last thing you'd expect to find is an iguana. But that's exactly what a kayaker named Steve found when he was fishing in the Florida Keys.
"What are you doing out here?"
Steve, who filmed the whole encounter with the iguana, has an endearing approach to the animal, talking to it as if it understands perfectly everything he's saying. He casually offers the iguana a ride back to shore.
The iguana is skeptical at first, almost swimming right past the kayak. But he comes back, realizing the boat is his best option.
Steve helps the iguana come aboard.
His kayak is equipped with a motor, and he doesn't want the iguana to fall off when he's going full speed, so he moves the iguana to a more comfortable position on his fishing box.
"We're almost home!"
When Steve finally gets close to shore, he calls back to the iguana, "We're almost home! Any of this look familiar to ya?" The answer is, apparently, "yes," because the iguana then jumps off the fishing box to swim the final 3 meters between the kayak and the brush along the shore.
Steven doesn't stop to check and make sure the iguana landed OK. But he jumped far from the propeller, and at the very end of the video, if you look closely, you can see him making the final swim to shore.
How the iguana ended up 4 miles from shore in the middle of the ocean is a complete mystery. But he's lucky Steve came along when he did, because he may not have been able to find his way back. Thanks to Steve, this story has a happy ending.
